Fell Championship 2017
February 26th Sun – Badger Bar Blast (AM 12k)
667m ascent. This is a relatively straightforward course up to Silver Howe and back. It does not follow paths all the way so there is some flexibility about route choice and a walk or recce is recommended if you are unfamiliar with the area.
March 19th Sun – Carrock Fell (AS 9k)
500m ascent. This is again, relatively straightforward but is typical rough, grassy terrain and will definitely need compass bearings in poor weather!
April 22nd Sat – Anniversary Waltz (AM 18.5k) (also Lakes GP counter)
1100m ascent. This is a well known race starting on the back of Catbells with a long flattish run in, selection of routes on to the Robinson ridge, running round over Hindscarth, Dale Head, High Spy and Catbells to finish back at Stair. So, quite a lot of running but all straightforward.
July 8th Sat – Wasdale (AL 34k) (also National Champs counter)
2750m ascent. This is a VERY tough race! It’s a long way, technical at times and good navigation skills are required. Recce essential!
July 26th Wed – Fellside (AM 11.3k)
580m ascent. I haven’t done this one but people say it’s a lovely evening run, mix of trail and tussocks I expect, but not technical!
August 16th Wed – (Not) Round Latrigg (BS 8.8k) (Also U18/U23 Championship race)
244m ascent. This route was altered following the floods and will go, as last year, up Spooney Green Lane, behind Latrigg and follow the Cumbria way to the gate beyond Lonscale returning by the same route. So this is an easy and familiar race route for Keswick runners.
September 17th Sun – Dale Head (AS 7.3k)
675m ascent. This is a tough little race going straight up and down Dale Head. Runners must follow the path up from Dale Head tarn but have route choice about the return. There are some technical stages and it is for the more experienced or confident runner. A couple of recces are worthwhile and will make it accessible even to the relatively inexperienced.
Overall champions for road and fell will be decided on the basis of members’ best 4 results from the 7 championship races.
Members can choose any 4 races from 7 (do not have to include races at all distances (short, medium and long).
To win the overall championships, members must compete in at least 4 races. Both championships will be decided on a points system, the leading KAC member (male and female) in each race will be awarded 100 points, with the points awarded to all other KAC members awarded by means of the following formula: Points = 100 x (fastest KAC time) / (runner’s time).
