Keswick Athletic Club’s James Appleton took first place in the annual Latrigg Fell Race on Wednesday night when he took on the 2.5 mile route with 900ft of ascent against 79 other runners.
James reached the top of Latrigg and returned to Fitz Park in 18 minutes 45 seconds, more than two minutes off Kenny Stuart’s record of 16:37 which has stood since 1984. He was followed by Ted Ferguson from Borrowdale Fell Runners in 19:29 and 17-year-old Harry Greenbank from Keswick AC in 19:49.
Unattached runner Kate Marriott won the Ladies race in 24:49 in an overall position of 35 followed by Helen Winskill (Keswick AC) in 26:38 (45 overall) and Kerry Cornforth (Keswick AC) in 26:46 (47 overall).
Sam Stead, who organises the race for Keswick Athletic Club, said:
“From my perspective as race organiser it was great to see so many new faces tackle this classic race, in particular we have a new name on the women’s trophy in Kate Marriott, who works at YHA Borrowdale and who’s unattached status will surely not last long.
The men’s top ten featured five under 23 runners and an under 18 runner, great to see new talent coming through, and a particularly impressive performance from young Harry Greenbank, finishing 3rd at just 17 years old”
The race was sponsored by Kong Adventure, Keswick Brewing Co. and Tonkin Massage Therapies.
